Called to Serve God

 Mark 10:45

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Psalm 100:2(a)

Serve the Lord with gladness

We seem to live in a world today that holds to the premise of “look out for number one.”  Due to the “expectations” set up by the world today, many of us strive for acceptance and strive for what we perceive as success.  Due to that strive, the world has convinced many of us that in order to succeed, you need to keep your thoughts to yourself and that we should keep our thoughts solely focused on us.  Of course, as are most things, is contrary to what Scripture commands us to do.  Instead, Scripture tells us that as believers, we are called to serve.  God tells us in Scripture that we are called to serve in many ways, but I want to focus on three things we are called to focus on.  We called to serve God, serve family, and serve others.

Serve God

1 Samuel 12:24

24 Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.

When it comes to service, and the strive to serve others, the act begins in the heart and the mind.  In this same book, God reminds Samuel that God does not look on the outward appearances of men, but He looks at the heart.  We are called to serve God, but not just serve God with actions, but with all of our heart, mind, and strength.

We have to continually and daily remind ourselves that we are to serve God with everything that we are.  We are to be as Joshua and make the decree that he said in Joshua 24: 15, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”   We have to stay focused on this because it is so easy to let our minds think, “What am I getting out of this?”  Our service should not be conditional.  It should be unconditional solely on the fact that God loves us and has served us in so many ways.  In fact, if we trust in the Lord like we say we do, we shouldn’t have to worry about reward because God already promised us that He would bless those who serve Him in spirit and truth.

John 12:26

26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

In John 12, Jesus tells us that the Father will honor all those who serve Jesus.  Dr. Charles Stanley has one of my favorite sayings when it comes to this principle.  Obey God, and leave all the consequences to Him.  God commands us to serve.  If we are faithful to serve God, then He will honor His promises because God is always faithful

So, how do we serve God?  There are many ways we can serve God, however the first and most important way is to serve Him the way He commanded us to serve Him.

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

We serve God by fulfilling the Great Commission.  We need to go out unto all the world, sharing the gospel, baptizing believers, and training disciples of Christ.

Over the next two days, we will continue our study on service.  Tomorrow we will talking about our call to serve our families.

Almighty Creator God,

Thank you for your Word.  Thank you for your many provisions.  Thank you for giving us even a breath into our lungs this day.  Lord, thank you for giving us the ability to serve you and the honor to serve you when we know you are all powerful and are not in need of our service.  We pray that you give us the strength and wisdom to serve you in all things.  We thank you God for being a faithful God.  We glorify you on this day.

Amen
