Called to Be A Student

 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

What a weird world it is right now to be a student in our educational establishments.  Many schools both primary, secondary, and universities have had to go to some form of distance and virtual learning due to the pandemic.  Instead of having face to face instruction, many of our students are having to study over the information superhighway and utilize video chats such as Zoom, etc.  Many of us feel bad for the lost experiences that some have and we pray for a quick resolution to this as we want a better world for our students.

Did you know however that God commanded all Christians to remain students.  We are students of the Word of God.  The word student actually means; a person who is studying or one who takes interest in a certain subject.  So, let me ask you when was the last time you studied the Bible?  I’m not talking about just reading the Bible (which should happen as well), but I’m actually talking about studying the Word of God?  When was the last time you sat down and said, “What does the Bible say about salvation?,” and then looked up the references on salvation?  Many Christians don’t study, let alone, read the Word of God on a regular basis anymore, however, we are commanded by God Himself to study His Word.  Look at 2 Timothy 2:15 again.  We are to study to show ourselves approved unto God, being able to rightly divide the truth.  There are so many different takes on what folks think the Scriptures mean and I’m said to say that many of them are downright wrong and are heresies.  Why do people get pulled into cults and other religions in today’s atmosphere?  Why do people abandon the church so easily anymore and discard anything of the Christian lifestyle.  A big part of it is because the foundation itself is weak due to a lack of studying and rightly dividing the Word of God.

The only way to true success in our life is to study the Word of God.  Sadly this fact is not taught much from the pulpit’s anymore but it is so true.  Our church programs consist more of entertainment items more than it does genuine Bible study and discipleship.  God has given a promise to His followers when we are diligent in the study of the Word of God.

Joshua 1:8

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

God’s promise is that if we meditate on His Word, that if we study His Word, then we will be prosperous and successful!  You may say, “Come on Josiah, that’s a vague promise..”  It’s not however.  Think about the principles that we find lying within the pages of Scripture.  Scripture tells us that we should be hard workers in order to make a living.  Colossians 3:23 says, “whatever you do, do heartily as unto the Lord and not unto men.”  What a great principle!  Can you imagine how much more effective our work force or even government leaders would be if they realized that above all things, work for God!  The book of Proverbs is steeped in wisdom for our everyday life.  Can you imagine what would happen if we successfully lived our lives based on the Ten Commandments?  So many conflicts would end.  Have you found something interesting even in the current dieting trends?  Yes, that’s right, if you read the diet originally set back in the book of Moses, many of the recommended diets heed to what God originally said!  Low carb, lean meat diet!  It's interesting as well in that same world how fasting has been proven to be effective in both our physical and mental health!  The Bible has proclaimed this from day one.

God’s Word is full of guidance for our lives.  We just need to open it and study it.

Have you ever felt lost in your world?  Have you ever had a situation occur and it seems so dark that you don’t know what next step you should take?  The Word of God will enlighten our way.  Psalm 119:105 says,

105

Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my path.

Isn’t the Word of God great!  Some of you may now be saying, “Josiah, I want to study the Bible, but I just don’t know where to begin.”

Can I give you a challenge?
