Called To Wait

 Psalm 37:7-9

7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who

prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the

earth.

How often do you find yourself being impatient? I know I find myself being that way quite often.

Every time my car door closes and I get on the interstate, I can feel that patience going down.

When you get in line at a fast food drive in, when you are number three hundred and twenty in

line at the Walmart check out register, or when you are in that beloved doctor’s lobby, waiting is

a hard thing for us to do. We want instant satisfaction and that seems to be for all of us. We

see it in our personal lives and we see it inside the walls of the church though. I’ve preached

many messages since the age of 12 and one thing I can attest to that is true to every crowd is

that you start seeing movement and faces when the hour hand strikes 12 on a Sunday morning.

Patience though seems to run thin in our own spiritual lives as well. I know it is in mine. I know

there are many times I wonder why God hasn’t answered my prayer. I know in my heart I’ve

been, “Come on God, I want this now.” Sometimes what we forget is that our Creator does

everything in His own time. He knows what is best for us. Sometimes we may think that God is

answering our prayer by saying no, but He may also be saying, “Wait.”

Scripture is full of accounts of God telling us to wait and be patient. Patience really is a virtue

established by God in the very beginning. Almighty God formed you. He knows your talents and

weaknesses, as well as every detail of your situation and potential results of any decision you

might make.

Your Creator knows what is best for your life. His plan for you, which is motivated by wisdom

and love, is executed with perfect timing. This last part can be hard for us to accept, especially

when it involves waiting. But patience is often part of the plan. Our human nature wants instant

gratification, but in some seasons of life, God teaches us to trust Him and yield those longings.

We demonstrate surrender and humility before Him when we submit to His timetable.

Of course, there is another option. God gave us the free will to choose His plan or step away

from it. When life does not follow our desired path, we can try to make things happen in our own

power. Though this option is tempting at uncomfortable times, it often leads to disappointment

and difficulty, and we end up missing God’s best.
