Called To Work Together
Genesis 2:18
18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
We have a society today that asserts that if we are going to be successful, it should be on our own merits and that a strong person accomplishes it alone. More and more I see social media posts claiming that “I don’t need anyone” or “a strong person goes it alone.” My friends, this is a lie from the very pits of hell. Mankind was never created to be alone. Even before the creation of Eve, God was with man in close fellowship. Then God Himself made this statement in our main verse that it is not good for man to be alone.
Knowing this, why do we continue to try to accomplish things on our own. One word, pride. Pride has been the downfall of man from the very beginning. Selfish pride not only led to the fall of man in the garden but was even the core behind Lucifer’s fall from grace. We become prideful, wanting to get any and all recognition for our accomplishments when in reality, God, no matter what, should be recognized for His role in our lives.
We were not created to go through this life alone and Scripture attests to that.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
9 Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Look what the book of Ecclesiastes says. Two are much better than one because we can lift each other up when we fall. We can keep each other warm when we are cold. We walk together. When we team up, we can accomplish anything. Not only that but Eccelesiastes closes this set of Scripture by reminding us that not only will we succeed when we are teamed up with each other but if the team walks with God, the threefold cord, we will never be broken.
God does not only want us to walk together, but He wants us to walk together with Him.
When we work together, we make ourselves stronger. We are not stronger alone. In fact, when we lean on each other, we learn more than we ever could learn on our own.
Proverbs 27:17 says,
17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
When we team up with each other, we bring happiness to each other and wisdom.
In closing of this devotion, I want us to look at the life of Jesus. That should always be our example and our first go to. It’s true that we should ask ourselves that old adage, “What would Jesus do?” Let’s look at what Jesus did when He began His ministry. He called the disciples. He did not go it alone. He could have. He had all the power to do it alone and not fail. He is God. However, He chose to minister and disciple with others around Him. He included the disciples in His work by sending them out unto the other towns ministering as we see in Luke 10. Not just the disciples, but 72 others as well!
God is all about teamwork and it is a necessity for the Christian to live an abundant life.
Let’s put aside this fall teaching that we have a successful life when we go it alone.
That is a lie.
A successful life is one full of friends, teammates, and brothers and sisters in Christ!
