Proverbial Wisdom: Warnings of Destruction

 Read Proverbs 6

Proverbs 6 is a strong chapter to read and one that gives great practical advice.  In this chapter, there are 3 main things that the Lord deals with that can cause destruction in our lives.  Unwise financial commitments, habitual laziness, and sexual sin.  While these are not the only things that can cause destruction in one’s life, God tells us in Proverbs that these can be major issues that can lead to our downfall.

Verses 1 through 5 specifically deal with the matter of unwise financial commitments.  Finances and the management of money is something everyone deals with.  God has wisdom to impart upon us in this fact.  We should also know that if we manage our money unwisely that it can cause major heartache in our life.  In this section of Proverbs however God is specifically talking to us about how we treat other people when they become a surety to us or if they lend us money.  In a nutshell God is instructing us that we should always keep our word.  If we borrow from a friend, we need to pay it back as soon as possible.  In reality, we should stay away as much as we can from borrowing from another, but if we do, we need to make sure that all debts are taken care of and people can know that they can trust us at our word.

Verses 6:6-11 Deals with a very strong topic in today’s world and a more serious virus than the coronavirus.  Laziness.  If one was to take a look at the overall work ethic of America today, it is a far cry from the work ethic from even 20 years ago!  We hear story after story of welfare abuses, joblessness, inadequacy at the job and more.  All because of a culture of laziness.  Here God tells us that we should be diligent as the ant preparing for the winter.  The famous tale of the ant and the grasshopper was based from the series of Scripture.  If you remember the tale, the ant spent the spring, summer, and fall diligently working and storing away food for the winter while the grasshopper spent it’s time playing and tending to the activities that he wanted to.  The end result was that the ant had plenty of food to sustain it during the winter while the grasshopper starved.  God gives us this same warning here in chapter 6.  We should be diligent to work and not lazy.  If we live a lazy lifestyle, we will only suffer the consequences from it.

Verses 12-19 specifically talks about the perverse man.  The attributes of the perverse man is one who has a tendency to cause drama and to be an overall busybody.  We all know those in our lives and the temptation to be one can also be very strong.  Again, God tells us to run away from that kind of attitude and preserve ourselves to live a life on honor and humility.

Verses 6:16-19 tells us of seven things that the Lord hates.  These tell us directly the traits that we should stay away from.

  1. Liars

  2. Murderers

  3. People that plan to destroy other people

  4. People who love to get caught up in drama and evil things

  5. Lying about other people's character

  6. A prideful person

  7. Gossip

In closing, Proverbs 6 again warns us again against the adulterous woman.   This chapter basically tells us there is no getting away with an adulterous relationship.  It will ultimately destroy us in one way or another.  The analogy of hot coals and the thief reminds us that there is no positive result in an adulterous relationship.  It will just lead us into destruction.  Not only will it destroy your personal life, but it will end up destroying the other persons as well.  Look at what says in regards to her jealous husband.  So many times when we get wrapped up in sin, we still think it’s about ourselves.  We have a tendency to forget that our sinful decisions will also hurt other people as well.  That is some wisdom we should always hold onto.  Let us not think about ourselves and only the results to ourselves, but how our decisions will affect others.
