Why Me?

 2 Corinthians 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. 6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

Have you ever just set back, looked at your life, and thought, “Why me?”?   I’m sure many of us have at one point in time.  Troubles and adversity are something that everyone will experience in life.  The Christian is not immune to this, no matter how many try to say otherwise.  Scripture itself testifies that if we love Jesus Christ, then we will suffer and go through persecution.  Matthew 10:22 says, 22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

One thing I think though that we as Christians have a tendency to forget though is that God allows adversity in our life, not as a negative experience, but one which can allow us to grow.  It’s hard for the world to understand.  It’s hard at times for us to understand.  When we look at it through the lens of truth however, and through the great love of Christ, we understand.  It’s hard to believe that the Lord may allow us to experience the hurt of a sudden death for a “future plan.”  It may be hard for us to believe that the pain of poverty we may be experiencing now may be a preparation for future things, but it is.

It’s also not necessarily for ourselves.  If you are a born again believer, when God looks at you, He sees His beloved Son.  He sees purpose and determination.  Part of that purpose is to spread the message of salvation to others.  We have a tendency so much to be inwardly focused.  That is the sinful part of us.  That’s why when adversity hits, we will scream, “Why me!”  We forget to realize that God may be allowing certain things to happen in our life solely to help someone else in the future.  Look at verses 3 and 4 again.

First, we have the promise that God will always comfort us.  If you hold to the truth that God is God, then God is truth and everything that He proclaims is the truth.  So, if God says that He will comfort us in our times of adversity, then He will undoubtedly comfort us.  We can hold strong to that promise and when the tough times come our way, we need to remember that piece of Scripture in our heart, reach out to the Lord in prayer, and have faith in that He keeps His promises.

Really look at verse 4 .  It says that God comforts us not just for our own benefit, but so that others as well may be encouraged by our testimony.

So many Christians today are ashamed and embarrassed of their paths that they walked in the past that they are unwilling to share their past experiences.  This is done mainly because of fear of ridicule and judgement by others.  However, think about it.  That is evil.  That is sinful.  The fact that people will judge you, revile you, and have hatred towards something that the Lord Jesus Christ forgave in your life, shows the evilness or their hearts and who is really behind it.  The enemy.  We are forgiven and free. Those past sins no longer have hold of us.  Therefore, be willing to share, because when you share about the blessed deliverance of your past battles through Jesus Christ, it glorifies Him and will bless you even more.

What is more important?  The salvation of others and the glorification of the Lord Jesus Christ or looking good in the eyes of sinful men?
